How to Apply & What to Expect (Step-by-Step Walkthrough)

How to Access and Maintain Your CDCP Care:

  1. Check Your Eligibility & Apply: Ensure you meet federal criteria (no access to private dental insurance, valid Canadian tax return filed, and adjusted family net income under $90,000). Apply online through My Service Canada Account or by phone via Service Canada (1-833-537-4342).

  2. Receive Your Sun Life Member Card: Once approved, Sun Life will mail your welcome package, member card, and coverage start date.

  3. Book Your Appointment with Us: Contact Upper Mission Dental at 250.469.9680 or book online. Provide your CDCP Member ID, and our team will handle your benefit coordination directly!

  4. Renew your CDCP Annually: To keep your Canadian Dental Care Plan active and avoid any gaps in coverage, your eligibility must be reassessed on an annual basis. The process is quick and simple as long as your annual taxes are up to date!

    • File Your Annual Taxes on Time: The federal government verifies your adjusted family net income and dental insurance status through your annual tax return with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). You and your spouse or common-law partner must file your taxes every spring to remain eligible.

    • Confirm Your Eligibility Online or by Phone: Once you receive your Notice of Assessment (NOA), log into your My Service Canada Account (MSCA) or use the Government of Canada online renewal tool (or call 1-833-537-4342) during the spring renewal window (typically between April and June 1).

    • Receive Your Determination Notice: Service Canada and Sun Life will send you a confirmation letter outlining your renewed coverage start date and any adjustments to your co-payment percentage based on your latest income.

    • Keep Using Your Existing Sun Life Card: Once renewed on time, you do not need a new member card—your existing Sun Life CDCP card and Member ID remain active!

Frequently Asked Questions About CDCP

What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) and who is eligible?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal government program designed to reduce financial barriers to oral healthcare for Canadian residents who do not have access to private dental insurance. To qualify, you must have an adjusted family net income under $90,000/year, have filed your prior year's Canadian tax return, and not have access to employer or private dental coverage.

Does Upper Mission Dental accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

Yes, Upper Mission Dental proudly accepts CDCP patients across Kelowna, the Upper Mission, Lower Mission, Crawford, South East Kelowna and Kettle Valley. When booking your appointment, simply let our team know that you are enrolled in the CDCP and have your Sun Life member card details ready so we can verify your coverage prior to your visit.

Will I have to pay anything out-of-pocket for my CDCP dental visit?

Depending on your adjusted family net income, the CDCP covers a specific percentage of the established federal fee guide (from 40% up to 100%). Additionally, because the CDCP fee schedule may differ slightly from the provincial British Columbia Dental Association (BCDA) fee guide, a small co-payment may apply. At Upper Mission Dental, we believe in 100% financial transparency and will always review all costs and estimates with you before starting treatment.

What dental treatments are covered under the CDCP in BC?

The CDCP covers a broad spectrum of essential oral health services, including regular examinations, diagnostic digital X-rays, hygiene cleanings (scaling), preventive fluoride, composite fillings, root canals, simple extractions, and partial or complete dentures. Certain specialized or complex procedures may require pre-authorization from the CDCP before treatment begins.

Do I have to renew my Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) every year?

Yes, CDCP eligibility is reassessed annually by the Government of Canada to confirm you still meet the program criteria (no private dental insurance and an adjusted family net income under $90,000). To ensure there is no interruption to your dental care, make sure you and your spouse/partner file your annual tax returns on time each spring, then confirm your renewal through your My Service Canada Account (MSCA). Your existing Sun Life member card remains valid once renewed.
