Frequently Asked Questions About Sedation Dentistry

Will I be completely asleep during IV sedation dentistry?

While IV sedation is frequently called "sleep dentistry" or "twilight dentistry," you are not actually unconscious as you would be under general anesthesia in a hospital. Instead, you are placed into a state of profound, deep relaxation. You remain completely safe, breathing on your own and able to respond to gentle prompts from Dr. Drever, but your brain will not register anxiety or time. A major benefit of IV sedation in Kelowna is its powerful amnesic effect, meaning you will likely remember absolutely nothing about your procedure once it's finished.

Is sedation dentistry safe, and who monitors me?

Absolutely. Patient safety is our single highest priority at Upper Mission Dental. Dr. Drever has undergone extensive, rigorous post-doctoral clinical training to safely administer moderate oral and intravenous (IV) sedation. Throughout your entire procedure, your vital signs—including blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels—are continuously monitored by a dedicated team member, using state-of-the-art medical equipment. Our clinical team remains right by your side every single second you are sedated.

Do I need someone to drive me home after a dental sedation appointment?

It depends strictly on the level of sedation you choose. If you receive nitrous oxide (laughing gas), the effects wear off completely within three to five minutes of breathing pure oxygen, meaning you are legally and physically safe to drive yourself home immediately. However, if you utilize oral conscious sedation or IV sedation, the medications require several hours to fully leave your system. For these deeper comfort options, you are required to have a trusted adult drive you to the clinic, stay during the visit, and escort you safely home afterward.

Does dental insurance cover the cost of sedation dentistry in BC?

Coverage varies depending on your specific private dental insurance provider and your unique policy guidelines. Many insurance plans will partially or fully cover the cost of dental sedation if it is deemed medically or clinically necessary for surgical procedures like wisdom teeth extractions or complex restorative care. Our dedicated dental administration team in Kelowna will happily submit a pre-determination directly to your insurance company before your appointment, mapping out your exact coverage so you face zero financial surprises.

Do I need to live in Kelowna to use your dental clinic?

We often see patients from outside of Kelowna for IV Sedation and complex restorative care (implants, wisdom teeth extraction) frequently. We regularly see patients from West Kelowna, Lake Country, Peachland, Summerland, Penticton. Armstrong, Vernon, Enderby, Grindrod and even as far as Alberta. We happily have video consultations with remote patients.
